Men and Women of God

As we move closer to Christmas we approach not only the end of a year, but the end of a decade.

I graduated high school in 2000, so the past 10 years for me have been a period of extreme growth and transition. A lot of mistakes, a lot of lessons learned, and a lot of grace. As the decade ends I look back on where God has brought me. College, beginning a career and then moving on to full time ministry… I have learned in a short time that chasing the things of this world leave you tired and empty. It is like chasing the wind. But a life lived for Jesus is a life lived with purpose. And if you rest in Him, it is a life of peace.

These past 10 years have taught me to hold all things loosely. Time, money, relationships… life. God has given a lot, and taken a lot away. It could all be taken away at any moment. I end 2009 thankful but humbled at how big God is. I am no match for His plan, and though it is good, it requires sacrifice and surrender. It requires obedience. I really have no choice but to surrender and submit to His will. The irony is that in doing so I actually find the freedom to start living. I throw away all the things the world tells me I need, and I find freedom and rest in the arms of God. When I follow and obey Him, I find my true identity.

The man of God has no need for the world, women no longer master his eyes. He doesn’t spend money on things that prove his worth, or fighting to prove his strength. The opposite, he is strong but silent. When he speaks people listen. When he walks he moves in the power of the Spirit. It is a strength defined by presence, not words. Where there is pain and hurt he is there to comfort. He is a shoulder to lean on. He knows how to forgive and ask for forgiveness. He understands that God is God, Jesus is the way, and all who call on His name will be saved. He is called to lead, in his home, and at church. He steps up and is a man. He knows he will come under attack, as all leaders do, but he will lead with love and stand by the strength of Jesus.

The woman of God has no need for the world. Material things no longer wrestle for position in her heart. Single, she no longer bows down to the idol of marriage. Married, she is faithful to her husband. She is strong, but her words are few. She doesn’t gossip, she doesn’t run her mouth. When she speaks it is with power, because her words are thoughtfully chosen. When she walks she moves in the power of the Spirit. It is strength defined by presence, not words. She is a peacemaker. Her strength is not in her outward beauty, all though she takes care of the temple which is her body. Where there is pain and hurt she is there to comfort. She knows how to forgive and ask for forgiveness. She understands that God is God, Jesus is the way, and all who call on His name will be saved.

They both speak the power of life, not death. They both encourage. They both surrender and submit their lives to Jesus and His supreme authority in their lives. They acknowelge that Jesus is the Word, and the Word is timeless. It transcends culture and time and is a decree from a King. He desires obedience over praise. They bow down only to the throne of the Living God. They submit their lives to the path that God has set out before them.

It is only then that they move in power.

It is only then that they find strength.

It is only then that they begin to understand the gravity of the cross and the blood that was shed for them. When the authority and power of Jesus is made real in their lives, and when they acknowledge that the King of the universe died to set their ransomed souls free. This demand our lives, our all.

We are the children of God. We are His men and women. It is time to start living like it. As we celebrate the end of a decade and what God has done, we look expectantly to the future and what God has in store. Many will enter into glory with our Creator. The future will be hard for those who follow Christ, and it will be increasingly important to live out what I just detailed. We must count our lives as lost for the gospel, in order to obtain the prize to which we are called to in Christ Jesus.

Let’s get started.
